Under this scheme, community pharmacists can now provide treatment for conditions such as earache, sore throats, sinusitis and uncomplicated UTIs, including antibiotics where appropriate. This could potentially save up to 10m GP appointments per year, a significant change benefiting the NHS and patients who will be able to get the care they need more quickly While this move has been praised by many, not everyone is on board. Asda has offered to put £1 in its customers’ rewards app cash pots if they talk to their pharmacy teams about Pharmacy First, which has caused some controversy.
